CandidaGo FAQ

Candida Go FAQ by Vitaana Health

This is a very good question!

The symptoms of candida overgrowth are nonspecific, meaning that most of them could also be symptoms of another medical condition.

Briefly, options include:

1. Testing

2. Quantifying symptoms

3. Quantifying risk factors

Please see our ‘Candida Information’ page for more information.

Take two capsules of Candida Support a day with meals in divided doses, ideally one with breakfast and one with dinner, but it’s okay to take with breakfast and lunch.
Probiotics are most helpful. Although Candida Support contains L. Acidophilus, a higher dose can be taken along with it as the treatment progresses.

It may be best to wait until any severe die-off symptoms have subsided before taking high-dose probiotics.

Milk thistle can be useful for liver support.

A more intensive liver cleanse is recommended by some practitioners. Others prefer to use such a cleanse separately, either before or after taking antifungal formulas, as it can increase the severity of die-off symptoms when used concurrently.

There are other antifungals that can be added. These include garlic and herbal tannates, among others, however, it may be better to rotate these with CandidaGo. If you do choose to use them concurrently, it may be best to wait until any severe die-off symptoms have subsided.

Yes, it is essential to follow an anti-Candida diet. Without diet changes, it may be impossible to completely control or eliminate Candida overgrowth.

Please refer to our ‘Candida Information Page’ for additional information.

You may also sign up to receive a copy of our complimentary anti-Candida diet guide at https://vitaanahealth.com/candida

Some report bringing their Candida overgrowth under control within weeks, although symptoms may improve much sooner.

Fully eliminating an overgrowth from the body may however take a period of months. For some, it takes over a year. This is particularly likely if the Candida is severe, or if it has been present for many years. It can take much longer if not following an anti-Candida diet.

Once the symptoms are relieved, it is important to continue taking the supplement until you are retested and found to be free of Candida overgrowth.

If testing indicates that the overgrowth has been eliminated, it is not necessary to continue taking CandidaGo.

If test results remain positive, or if symptoms persist, it is important to continue treatment with antifungals and/or high dose probiotics.

It IS a good idea to have antifungals on hand in case you take antibiotics in the future. In a susceptible individual, Candida may also overgrow again during times of stress or increased challenges to the immune system, including dietary challenges.

Although natural substances are often safer than other alternatives, most of them have not been tested in pregnant women, as such testing presents unique challenges.

CandidaGo has not been tested in pregnant women, nor have many of its ingredients. It is best to err on the side of caution and not take it while pregnant.

Although natural substances are often safer than other alternatives, most of them have not been tested in breastfeeding women, as such testing presents unique challenges.

CandidaGo has not been tested in breastfeeding mothers, nor have most of its ingredients.

Apart from concerns regarding potential harm to the infant, an additional concern during breastfeeding is the strong oregano flavor. This may be transmitted to the mother’s milk.

Also, Black Walnut may reduce milk production in a lactating mother.

This is variable. Some notice an improvement in symptoms within days, particularly in the case of a mild or recent infection.

In the case of a severe or longstanding overgrowth, an immunosuppresed or more debilitated individual, it may take weeks, or even months.

In some cases, it is possible to increase the speed of response by taking a higher dose probiotic or additional antifungals. But remember that using these early in treatment may increase die-off symptoms.

Die-off symptoms are caused by the toxins released into the body by the yeast as they die.

Please refer to “What Is Die-off” on the ‘Candida Information’ page for more information.

There are a number of strategies that can help to minimize die-off symptoms.

Please refer to “What can I do to minimize die-off symptoms” on the ‘Candida Information’ page

This is a symptom that is occasionally experienced as the yeast are killed off by this or other antifungal treatments.

Some believe that it may be an indication that heavy metals stored in the body are being released into the system.

Try taking bentonite clay (food grade) or charcoal capsules, but be sure to take clay or charcoal well away from meals and nutritional supplements as they may also bind and cause elimination of beneficial nutrients. [/accordion_item][accordion_item title=”I get a strong taste of oregano throughout the day when taking CandidaGo. Is this normal? ” open=”no” bg_color=”#FF9305″]CandidaGo does contain a high dose of oregano, perhaps the most important ingredient in the formula. Some people are particularly sensitive to the strong flavor.

If you are bothered by it, you may find it helpful to take CandidaGo early in your meals. Try eating a little, taking CandidaGo, then finishing your meal.

It’s always best to work with a licensed medical provider.

This is (with the exception of the oregano) a low potency formula if taken according to the instructions on the label, however, a licensed M.D. or naturopathic physician can order some of the most accurate tests for diagnosing candida overgrowth. Of course, there is much that you can do on your own to build a strong case for or against the likelihood of Candida being the cause of your symptoms.

Also, some of the die-off symptoms can be worrying or frightening, but manageable by a knowledgeable practitioner.

CanidaGo is exclusively for sale on Amazon.com. You can place your order on Amazon by going to the following link: http://vitaana.com/candida or by clicking on the image at the end of this page.
Please read carefully if you have severe problems with allergies or sensitivities, especially reactions to foods, including oral allergy syndrome. Most of these are rare, but you probably already know if you are included in this group. Of course, one of the hallmarks of candida overgrowth is an increase in allergies/sensitivities because of the damage it causes to the intestinal mucosa (gut lining). An increase in its permeability allows antigens to be absorbed into the body where defense systems are activated and antibodies mobilized against these substances, causing inflammation.

The only ingredient in CandidaGo that is a common allergen is black walnut (see “ALLERGEN WARNING” on product label). But it is impossible to formulate a product that can be guaranteed to never cause an allergic reaction because any ingredient in any product can cause an allergic reaction in someone. This can even include aloe vera and capryllic acid, both often used for healing the skin, or reishi, enzymes, and L. acidophilus, all of which are sometimes used by practitioners to prevent or treat allergies and sensitivities.

A Few General Suggestions

The instructions read, “take 2 capsules daily with meals.” Unless under the care of a knowledgeable practitioner, it is important that you do not exceed this dose, and it is best that the two capsules be taken with 2 different meals. Taking an excessive dose (more than 2 daily, or taking both with a single meal) may contribute to lasting sensitization to an ingredient in the product. If you know that you are particularly sensitive, consider starting with one capsule a day.

Also, if you are a particularly sensitive individual, or if you suspect an allergy or sensitivity to any ingredient, you may choose to try first taking each of the ingredients separately. Unless you suspect a sensitivity to another ingredient, oregano is a good place to start because it is present in a high dose in CandidaGo and so it may be more likely to cause a reaction in a sensitive individual.

If you have already taken a high dose, you may have developed a permanent sensitization to it. If not already sensitized, you may need to take an equivalently high dose to be certain if you will react, but be safe and start with a low dose initially.

Before deciding to try this option, consider whether or not any of the allergies listed below apply to you. (Some of these have been shown to cause reactions primarily when injected, or when their pollens are inhaled, so oral use may not cause a reaction.)

Some Clues to Potential Allergic or Sensitivity Skin Reactions

…including reactions reported to be caused by these ingredients or related substances (Active Ingredients only):

  • Oregano is most likely to cause a reaction in someone who is allergic to the Mint family.
  • Capryllic acid can cause a skin reaction in someone who is allergic to coconut (or tree nuts or peanuts), although this is also rare.
  • Arabinogalactan could cause an allergic reaction in someone with larch allergy.
  • Anise could cause a reaction in someone allergic to the Apiaceae family, which includes caraway, dill, cumin and fennel, also in those allergic to mugwort or birch pollen, or to celery.
  • Artemisia: the pollen has been studied for allergic potential, however, individuals who may have reactions include those with allergies to honey, sunflower seeds, chamomile, pistachio, nuts, apple, lettuce, pollen, beer and carrot.
  • Aloe vera could cause a reaction in those allergic to plants in the Liliacease family, which includes garlic and onion.
  • Capryllic acid (derived from coconut oil) could trigger allergies in those who are allergic to coconut, tree nuts and peanuts.
  • Reishi: there have been instances of skin reactions, primarily to injected reishi preparations, however, there is at least one report of an apparent skin reaction to reishi wine.
  • L. acidophilus: some potential exists for adverse reactions in patients who do not tolerate dairy products.
  • Protease and cellulase: while digestive enzymes, including protease and cellulase, are often used for preventing or treating adverse reactions to foods, even these can occasionally cause a reaction in a susceptible individual.

If you have reactions, especially to the oral use of any of these, either avoid or use caution when beginning use of CandidaGo.

And Finally

  1. If you are allergic or sensitive to any of its ingredients, CandidaGo may not be appropriate for you. In that case, you do have other natural options. Consider other natural antifungals. Probiotics are also important, however, keep in mind that they are used for replenishing the beneficial flora that are crowded out by the candida, not as specific antifungals.
  2. Not all uncomfortable reactions to CandidaGo are allergic/sensitivity reactions, or even adverse reactions, per se. Especially if candida infection is severe, a Herxheimer (“die-off”) reaction can occur. This may trigger or exacerbate any symptoms that can be caused by candida overgrowth itself. While this is a positive sign, discomfort can be mild or severe, and only you and your healthcare provider can determine when it is appropriate to make adjustments in your supplement dosing and diet.

.

It is best to alternate CandidaGo with other antifungals and/or high-dose probiotics if using long-term.
While this is not a common reaction, it has occurred in at least one user and so is worth addressing.

A Herxheimer, or die-off, reaction occurs when dying candida release toxins into the body. This can cause or exacerbate any of the myriad of candida symptoms, especially in the early stages of treatment.

If you have constipation as a primary symptom of your candida (or constipation-dominant type of IBS), you could take one capsule a day for a week or more before increasing to the full dose of two a day.

Several of the ingredients (Oregano, Aloe Vera, Arabinogalactan, Black Walnut) in CandidaGo are sometimes used to treat constipation, while others (L. acidophilus, Anise, Artemisia, Reishi, and digestive enzymes, including Protease and Cellulase) are sometimes used to normalize bowel function, and so may be used to treat both constipation and diarrhea. That said, occasionally one of these has been reported to have a paradoxical (opposite) effect.

One ingredient (Capryllic Acid) has sometimes been known to cause gastrointestinal symptoms, however, this ingredient is present here near the lower end of the therapeutic dose range, which is unlikely to cause symptoms, with the exception of the Herxheimer reaction mentioned above.

Finally, CandidaGo does contain fiber in the form of arabinogalactan. While fiber is one key to preventing constipation, it is essential to drink enough water while taking it, or it can cause or worsen constipation. At a minimum, drink ½ as many ounces of plain water every day as you weigh in pounds.

A few additional suggestions:

1) Consider taking magnesium. If your symptoms also include insomnia, you could take it near bedtime.

2) Drink hot water with lemon juice.

3) Consider taking a break from CandidaGo and beginning with a liver cleanse, also using castor oil packs over the liver three times a week, then return to using CandidaGo.

4) Be persistent in working to eliminate your candida, as candida itself can cause constipation.

Candida Information Vitaana Health

What do toenail fungus, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), oral thrush (infant, child or adult), and brain fog have in common? Surprisingly often, the answer is Candida albicans overgrowth, commonly known as Candida, or Candida infection.

It can be a cause of a urinary tract infection or a sinus infection. When it affects the vagina, it is commonly called a yeast infection. When it affects the ear, it may be either a middle ear infection or, more frequently, an infection of the external canal.

It can also lead to problems with sleep, energy, mood, cognitive function, and others too numerous to list. Because it can affect any system of the body, and frequently affects multiple systems, it may go undiagnosed, or incorrectly diagnosed, for years.

Starving and weakening the Candida while supporting and mobilizing the immune system to fight it is key in controlling an overgrowth. Some medical providers use pharmaceutical antifungals for this purpose. Others use combinations of natural anti fungal options, due to their concerns regarding potential effects of the pharmaceuticals on the liver and other systems of the body.

Candida Information by Vitaana Health

What is Candida?

What we commonly refer to as Candida, or Candida infection, is an overgrowth of Candida Albicans. Normally, it is a commensal (harmless and one part of a mutually beneficial balance) organism in the human body. When the body is healthy, it coexists harmoniously along with billions of other microorganisms. It is the overgrowth, not the presence of the Candida, that causes symptoms.

What causes Candida to get out of control?

The causes of Candida overgrowth are threefold. Some would say fourfold, fivefold, sixfold … But essentially, they fall into three categories: what we put into our bodies and shouldn’t, what we should put into our bodies and don’t, and the overall condition of the body. Let’s consider these in greater detail.

1. What we put into our bodies and shouldn’t

This includes food that is not appropriate for us, and in some cases, is not appropriate for humans in general. These foods present a challenge to the immune system, requiring that its resources be spent dealing with our reactions to those foods rather than maintaining the balance of Candida and other microorganisms.

Some problem foods are unique to the individual. Most of us have specific food allergies, intolerances or sensitivities to one or more foods or food families. When we eat those foods, the immune system considers them to be toxic.

Also problematic are foods that depress the immune system or feed the Candida. In the case of Candida overgrowth, the most harmful foods are simple sugars and starches (think “white” as in white flour and sugar, although processed foods often include others that don’t appear to be white). Candida thrives on sugar, and on all of the foods that are rapidly broken down into sugar when we eat them.

Gluten deserves a special mention. Because the symptoms are so numerous and varied, it is impossible to know how many people are gluten intolerant/sensitive/allergic. Like Candida, right? This is a separate issue from celiac disease, which is somewhat more readily diagnosed, although there continue to be many who are never tested nor ever treated presumptively with gluten avoidance, and continue to suffer.

Medications (both those we take for our own bacterial infections and those that have been given to the animals we consume) are common culprits. Sometimes we may need to use them, however, medical professionals have come to realize that they are frequently overused. Antibiotics kill off the bad bugs that cause diseases but also decimate the beneficial microorganisms, which are the good guys that normally keep bad bugs (or potentially bad bugs) in check. This can lead to overgrowth of Candida, as well as other disease-causing organisms.

Other medications that have been implicated in Candida overgrowth include oral contraceptives (birth control pills), glucocorticoids (Prednisone, Cortisone, and numerous others).

2. What we don’t put into the body and should

This category includes the numerous vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are often in short supply in our modern diet. For many of us, the processed foods we eat, and even the fruits and vegetables that are grown in depleted soil, provide insufficient nourishment for the immune system. Often the animals we eat have been raised to maximize marketable meat rather than to optimize nutrition.

Also lacking for many of us are adequate sleep, exercise, and sunshine, also important for a healthy immune system.

3. The overall condition of the body

Specific health conditions: someone who is diabetic or has an immune system that has been suppressed, either artificially or by disease (cancer, chemotherapy, HIV or any other immunosuppresive disease or treatment) is particularly susceptible to Candida overgrowth. Some people, especially including some of those whose symptoms include digestive problems or hives, also have a hypersensitivity reaction to Candida. This is a different issue, though the treatment is the same.

Once a suppressed or unbalanced immune system has allowed Candida to overgrow, this becomes a self-perpetuating condition. The Candida overgrowth further suppresses the immune system, providing ever greater opportunity for overgrowth.

How do I know if I have Candida?

A licensed practitioner (including an M.D. or N.D.) can order and interpret the results of Candida tests. These may include stool, blood, and urine tests. (See below for details.)

Alternatively, or initially, a questionnaire can be used. This is a checklist of symptoms and risk factors, typically with weighted scoring to reflect the importance of each item. The higher your score, the more likely the possibility that Candida overgrowth is present.

The “spit test”, widely circulated online, is easily performed, however, it is a nonspecific assessment. It may be used if you give it no more weight than one of the weightier questions in the questionnaire.

Testing for Candida

Some of the most commonly used tests include:

Blood tests: most frequently used is a test that measures antibodies specific to candida.
Stool tests: these include fecal yeast culture
Urine test: this is best used in the case of urinary tract infection, as the information it provides applies only to the urinary tract.
What about the “spit test”?

The “spit test,” widely circulated online, is easily performed, however, it is a nonspecific assessment. It may be used if you give it no more weight than one of the weightier questions in the questionnaire.

How To Beat Candida – A 2/4/5 Step Action Plan

The Essentials:

1. Diet

Avoid sugars, especially refined sugars, yeasts, fungi, dairy products, and alcohol. Initially, all sugars, including fruit, should be avoided. Avoiding processed foods will get you off to a good start, as it will make it easier to eliminate these, as well as other harmful foods that compete for the resources of the immune system.

Avoid empty calories, foods that are low in vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and amino acids, especially those that are also high in calories.

Eat a healthy diet that is nutrient dense, including a healthy protein choice at every meal, a rainbow of colored vegetables, limited lower sugar fruits (initially no fruit except lemon and lime juices and avocado), and whole grains. Include fermented foods, such as plain, unsweetened yogurt and kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and others that are homemade or labeled as including live cultures. Other helpful foods include garlic, onions, coconut and olive oils, lemon and lime juices, ginger, pumpkin seeds, and cayenne pepper.

Drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins produced by the dying Candida. Every day, drink half as many ounces of water as you weigh in pounds. Best of all is to drink 20 ounces 20 to 30 minutes before each meal, when it will help you to produce digestive enzymes. It’s best not to drink it with meals when it will dilute the digestive enzymes.

2. Supplements

Generally speaking, treating candida overgrowth with supplements requires a three-pronged approach.

The three aspects of treatment include antifungals, probiotics, and enzymes.

  • The antifungals are the yeast killers.
  • The probiotics replenish the beneficial organisms that normally help to maintain an appropriate balance, but have been lost through antibiotic use or other insults.
  • The enzymes break down the fungal cell walls so that the antifungals can do their work effectively.

It is generally considered best to use a combination of antifungals. Combining them in a single supplement, while adding enzyme and probiotic support, allows for the use of a single product, rather than several different supplements.

Additionally Important

3. Sleep

Be sure to get 6 to 8 hours a night, so that your immune system can function optimally.

4. Exercise

Exercise also supports the immune system, and helps your body eliminate the toxins produced by Candida die-off.

One last factor to address

5. Stress

Exercise helps, but also consider meditation, yoga or just deep breathing.

If you smoke, this is a great time to quit. Your immune system needs all the help it can get for fighting the Candida infection.

Die-Off Symptoms

What is Die-Off ?

Die-off symptoms are caused by the toxins released into the body by the yeast as they die. They are most likely to occur in someone with a severe Candida infection, or possibly in someone who suddenly eliminates sugar and starchy carbohydrates after having eaten a diet that is high in these foods.

Some common die-off symptoms include intense sugar and carbohydrate cravings, fatigue, nausea, headaches, skin rashes, and many more. They may also include worsening of any of your existing Candida symptoms.

If you choose to incorporate an intensive liver cleanse at the same time as you begin the Candida diet and supplement, you may experience more severe die-off symptoms. On the other hand, beginning with a liver cleanse before starting the diet and taking antifungals can lessen the likelihood of die-off symptoms.

How do I know if I am suffering from die-off symptoms?

Timing is the major clue. Die-off symptoms, if they occur at all, generally occur early in the course of treatment of Candida, and lessen, then disappear, as the treatment continues.

The type of symptoms you are experiencing may also provide a clue. Some common die-off symptoms include intense sugar and carbohydrate cravings, fatigue, nausea, headaches, and skin rashes. They may also include worsening of any of your existing Candida symptoms.

What can I do to minimize die-off symptoms?

1. You may choose to wean down gradually on the foods you are to avoid, perhaps eliminating some of them before you begin taking antifungal drugs or supplements.

3. Use bentonite clay (food grade) or charcoal capsules to absorb and eliminate the toxins being produced. It is best to limit the use of clay or charcoal to times when the symptoms are most severe, and to take it well away from meals and nutritional supplements. It can also bind and eliminate some beneficial nutrients.

4. If the strategies above are not sufficient to relieve your discomfort, try taking a lower dose antifungal supplement until you are able to tolerate the full dose.

5. Check with your health care provider for additional suggestions to manage die-off symptoms.
